All Africa based organizations working in education (primary, secondary, tertiary education; non-formal and adult education) and combating poverty in an innovative, sustainable and effective way are invited to participate in Pan-African Awards for Entrepreneurship in Education. Teach a Man to Fish is seeking for organizations or projects making great changes in their community. Entries can be made by a non-African NGO on behalf of their local partner/office (in Africa) in a condition that the prize money and conference travel bursaries are claimed by and used for the benefit of Africa-based organization.
Teach a Man to Fish partners with the Saville Foundation to award this prize.
- US$10,000 – Best entry award
- US$5,000 each – Two runner ups
- US$1,000 each – 55 best entries from each African country
- Top three award winners will be offered a sponsored trip to the international conference and peer-learning workshop of Teach a man to fish.
- Media publicity and enhanced sponsorship and donation opportunities are other benefits.
- Applicants can be organizations in any African country focusing on education.
- Applying professionals can be teachers, doctors, lawyers, judges, accountants, bankers, engineers, and police officers.
- Organizations outside Africa can submit entries on behalf of their African partner. The African organization will be beneficiary in this condition.
- Entries must be accompanied by work contact details of a suitable referee. Referees must be independent of entrant organization and either a government official, qualified professional, or senior employee of an internationally recognized institution. Referees cannot be family members of the entrant.

The Washington Fellowship is the flagship program of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative. President Obama launched YALI in 2010 to support young African leaders as they spur growth and prosperity, strengthen democratic governance, and enhance peace and security across Africa. The Washington Fellowship, which begins in 2014, will bring 500 young leaders to the United States each year for academic coursework and leadership training and will create unique opportunities in Africa for Fellows to put new skills to practical use in leading organizations, communities, and countries.
The Washington Fellowship includes:
A 6-week Academic and Leadership Institute: Fellows are placed at U.S. colleges and universities for
academic institutes. Institutes will focus on skills development in one of three areas: Business and
Entrepreneurship, Civic Leadership, or Public Management. Institutes will take place from mid-June
to late July 2014.
A Summit with President Obama in Washington, DC: At the conclusion of the academic and
leadership institute, all Fellows will participate in a Presidential Summit. The Summit will take place
in late July 2014.
An optional 8-week U.S. Internship: As part of the Fellowship application, individuals may apply to
receive practical training at a U.S. business, civil society organization, or public agency in the United
States. Approximately 100 Washington Fellows will be selected for U.S.-based internships. The U.S.
internships will take place in August and September 2014.
Activities in Africa: Fellows will have the opportunity for continued networking opportunities,
ongoing professional development, access to seed funding, and community service activities upon
their return home after the Fellowship.

The Commonwealth Youth Programme Regional Centre for Africa (CYP RCA) is pleased to announce the upcoming Regional Consultation on Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC) organized by the Commonwealth Secretariat. The Meeting is scheduled for 30th July – 3rd August, 2012 in Kampala, Uganda.
The overall objective of the meeting is to build consensus towards the establishment of a Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC) as mandated by Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2011 in Perth, Australia. The meeting will also build youth leadership capacity and facilitate experience sharing on the work of NYCs. The conference will also create a platform for discussions on and development of strategies for promotion of NYCs in the Commonwealth.
The meeting participants will be drawn from Commonwealth member countries, representatives of the National Youth Councils, Ministries responsible for Youth Affairs, YOUNG PEOPLE, UN agencies and key development partners. The three days meeting is expected to bring together a total of about 60 international participants.
CYP therefore is seeking applications from two (2) young people on our Facebook group page, for the first time, via www.facebook.com/groups/cypafrica/. If picked, CYP will support the nominated participants with a return ticket to Uganda, accommodation, meals and local transport during the period of the meeting in Kampala, Uganda.
Applicants MUST satisfy the following criteria:
- Be between the ages of 18-29 (Not older than 29 on their last birthday)
- Be a Legal citizen of one of the Commonwealth member countries under the Africa region (Botswana, Cameroon, Cyprus, , Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Malta, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, The Gambia, Uganda, United Kingdom and Zambia)
- Have more than Six (6) months left on his/her International Passport and must be amember of ‘CYP Africa’ group on Facebook.
- Engaged with youth or civil society organization(s)/ a Commonwealth Association and able to show evidence of example of leadership or potential for leadership
- Available to visit Uganda for the period of 30th July – 3rd August, 2012

What is the time commitment?
- One academic school year
- Approximately ten hours per month

The 2012 edition of the Zeitgeist ‘Young Minds’, a competition to find 10 pioneers, change-makers and leaders of tomorrow aged 18 – 24, across Europe, Middle East and Africa* is now open. The winners will take their place alongside the greatest visionaries of today at Google Zeitgeist 2012 near London on May 20th – 22nd 2012.
From January 25th until March 19th 2012, the search will be on to find 10 exceptional, motivated and inspiring 18-24 year-olds from across EMEA*, who are making a positive impact in the world through science, the arts, education, innovation or inspiration.
The lucky winners will be invited to participate in Google’s annual Zeitgeist event, where previous speakers have included Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts, Google CEO Larry Pageand Chairman Eric Schmidt. They will also win a brand new Google tech gadget and get the chance to take to the stage and have their voice heard.
Last year saw the first ever ‘Young Minds’ competition in both the UK and America. The lucky finalists won an experience of a lifetime, from meeting Chelsea Clinton and Will I Am, to taking part in panel discussions with Jon Snow and Martha Lane Fox (Co-founder Lastminute.com).
Orli Setton was a winner from 2011 and described attending Zeitgeist as “magical, fantastic and powerful! What I enjoyed most was the innovative, energetic and creative atmosphere.”
