The United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) is an autonomous research institute within the UN system that undertakes multidisciplinary research and policy analysis on the social dimensions of contemporary development issues. Through our work, we aim to ensure that social equity, inclusion and justice are central to development thinking, policy and practice.
UNRISD is now accepting applications for a three-month internship position, starting in August/September 2013, to assist with an inquiry into the linkages between social protection and human rights.
Eligible candidates must be currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD degree programme (as per UN Secretariat rules regarding interns) in law, sociology, anthropology, political science or a related field at an accredited university, and have academic and professional experience in issues related to social protection and/or human rights .The right candidate will have excellent written and analytical skills with proven ability in interdisciplinary work; ability to deliver high-quality research under tight deadlines; ability to work both independently and within a small team; networking skills; and strong attention to detail. Written and spoken fluency in English are essential; strong communications skills applied to online platforms, such as blogs and other internet channels, are a plus. We are especially interested in candidates with expertise in applying a rights-based approach to social policy.
While at UNRISD, the intern will be asked to:
provide research assistance for the inquiry into the linkages between social protection and human rights;
conduct library and internet searches for a literature review on the subject, and compile key documents;
develop a network of experts from all geographical regions examining issues of social protection and human rights;
support communications activities in order to achieve effective outreach and dissemination of the results of the inquiry;
assist with managing, revising and editing posts for a multi-author blog on the topic for the UNRISD website, and uploading new content.
The deadline for applications is Wednesday 31 July 2013 (Midnight, Central European Time), with the start date as soon as possible thereafter. The duration of the internship is three months, with the possibility of a one-month extension.
